Kitten and rabbit thrown from car window in Chesterfield

A kitten and a rabbit have been rescued after being “cruelly” thrown from a car window onto a road in Chesterfield.

The RSPCA launched an investigation after a woman saw the incident on Broomhill Road, Old Whittington, on Tuesday.

He said he was driving down the road when he saw the animals being thrown out the window of a black sports car, which then took off at high speed.

The charity has urged anyone with information to get in touch.

He said the woman managed to capture the rabbit and put it in the care of the RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire branch.

She was unable to locate the kitten that had escaped, but two days later she was driving her husband to work in the area and saw it.

Her husband managed to lure the six-month-old animal using chicken from their sandwiches before trapping and caring for it.

Steph McCawley, fan engagement officer at the branch, said: “These poor pets were cruelly thrown from a car window and left in such a vulnerable position – we were so lucky they were found and now we are looking after them.”

“Fortunately, they appear unharmed from this horrific act and are doing well in our care.

“None of the pets are microchipped so we will care for them in case an owner can be found. Otherwise they will be put up for adoption when they settle down.”

Ms McCawley added: “We are really concerned that people are abandoning their pets in such terrible ways, especially with the ongoing cost of living crisis.

“Times are tough right now and we understand that many families are struggling to get by, and we fear that we will see many, many more pets given to charity or abandoned because their owners just don’t know where to turn.”
